Apple unveils 2GB iPod shuffle

Another good news for all you music lovers. Apple introduced a new version of the product with twice the capacity of the existing model. And if you say is that all, then I have more new for you. Apple has cut the price of its existing iPod shuffle.

The company has cut the price of the 1GB version of the device to £32 (US$64) from £49. Apple also confirmed plans to introduce a 2GB model of the iPod shuffle which would be priced at £45. The new model ships "later this month", the company explained.

"At just $49, the iPod shuffle is the most affordable iPod ever," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of worldwide iPod product marketing.

"The new 2GB model lets music lovers bring even more songs everywhere they go in the impossibly small iPod shuffle."

All prices are inclusive of VAT.

Lost Odyssey: The true Japanese RPG experience

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the man who defined Japanese RPGs (JRPGs) as we know them today through his immensely successful Final Fantasy series, has now come with the latest release – Lost Odyssey – has finally delivered the true Japanese RPG experience to the 'American' console. Though his previous effort – Blue Dragon – didn't do too much for the genre, probably because of its younger appeal and weaker storyline, it's this weak Japanese connection that Microsoft has had over the years that gave the PlayStation its edge. Lost Odyssey is a truly next-generation RPG created by acclaimed artists Takehiko Inoue (Japanese manga creator, made famous by Slam Dunk), Kiyoshi Shigematsu (a famous Japanese novelist) and Nobuo Uematsu (Japanese music composer, known for creating the music for the FINAL FANTASY series of games).

Lets start now with the review of what the Xbox 360 boasts to be the best new generation Japanese RPG released till date. Lost Odyssey's storyline takes the player through Kaim's life, a man who has been sentenced to live for 1,000 years. He lives through multiple generations, becomes a part of many families, falls in and out of love and gets into conflicts. All this is set in a world that is on the verge of a mystical industrial revolution, where mankind has attained dark powers.

Being true to the JRPG tradition, the gameplay is very linear with the only control in your hands being in the way you upgrade your character with add-ons and the party you select for specific missions. Think of it more as a glorified adventure game than an RPG in its true sense of the word. With that out of the way, the gameplay will make traditional Final Fantasy players feel right at home. The battles are the same turn-based fare but this time there are rings that you can use to spice up your attacks with some elemental damage or just plain brute force.

A JRPG using the Unreal III engine seems like an unlikely combination, but it works perfectly for Lost Odyssey. Everything from character designs to world models to elemental effects look absolutely brilliant. But this brilliance comes at a cost. To start with, the frame rate is not always stellar. Another 'cost' is the loading time when entering one area from another. Though these aren’t even close to being unbearable, their frequency is high enough to divert you attention when you’re intensely in the middle of a quest. The voice acting in Lost Odyssey was as good as it gets in a JRPG. You have the option to select Japanese, Korean or English as the spoken language, so if you’re anally purist, you could select the Japanese soundtrack with English subtitles. The background score goes perfectly with the game. Though there isn’t a track that sticks with you after play, or is immediately recognizable, it does its job of suiting the mood of the in-game situation.

In the end, this game may fall short of being recognized in the JRPG hall of fame, which is a shame considering it is the best effort in the current generation of consoles till date. Though it has the right story and the right gameplay, it doesn’t have that one distinguishable feature that sets a mark in the genre.

Safari for Windows: Hit or Miss?

About 7 months earlier, Apple launched its Safari browser for Windows. DID YOU HEAR IT? Well certainly some stats dont show so. Referring to the Google Analytics report (OS / Browser) and out the last 6 million visitors, only 8500 (0.15%) were using Safari on Windows. And guess what???? Apple says its the fastest browser for windows.
It seems Apple wants to prove that Safari 3 is the "world's best browser," but with alternatives like Camino and Omniweb, many will argue that Safari isn't even the best browser for Mac OS X, let alone the best browser for Windows.
Listing the flaws in Safari for Windows, the most glaring flaw of Safari 3 on Windows is its utter lack of stability. The problem faced during testing really exceed tolerable limits for beta software.Safari hangs and freezes frequently, and once it completely locked up my system, necessitating a hard reset. Unlike Firefox, Safari 3 can't automatically restore the previous browsing session after a crash.
Next to go, most mainstream web browsers allow users to rotate through tabs by hitting Ctrl + Tab. Safari is the exception this rule and uses Ctrl + Shift + [ and Ctrl + Shift + ] instead of Ctrl + Tab and Ctrl + Shift + Tab. Unfortunately, this behavior is not configurable. Even more frustrating than that, Safari's inline search feature doesn't let you activate links with the Enter key. next and most important: Security. Although the Safari 3 web page claims that Safari was designed to be "secure from day one," a number of security vulnerabilities have already been found. So guys better look out while using safari.

Now the good points: When using Safari 3 on Windows, one can clearly see that much effort went into making the Windows Safari experience as similar as possible to the Mac OS X Safari experience. So all you people who want to experience Mac OS X go for it. Adding to good points, Safari 3 for Windows uses the Mac OS X font anti-aliasing mechanism rather than ClearType, which is native to Windows. Aside from the slight rendering performance advantage, Safari 3 also includes a few nice features. For instance, Safari allows users to resize text boxes that are embedded in web pages. I'm also moderately impressed with Safari 3's inline find feature despite the fact that it can't be used to activate links. Rather than just highlighting words that match the page search query, Safari will dim the rest of the page to make matches stand out more clearly. Safari will also put orange highlighting around the active match and display a little animation when the user hits Ctrl+ G to rotate to the next match. The animation draws the user's attention to the new active match and makes it easier to see.

So here goes my analysis of Apple Safari for Windows. It is available to download for free. You can click here to download it.

MacBook Air : As thin as one could get

Motorola in mobiles and Apple in laptops. This slim thing has certainly turned heads towards it. Now apple are coming out with their slim lappies. MacBook Air. If 2007 was iphone year 2008 would surely be McBook Air year, a new slim 13.3 inch laptop that barely weighs about 3 pounds, sports a thickness of 0.16-0.76 inches, is 12.8 inches wide and 8.95 inches deep. And add this, display resolution of 1280X800.
As SRK says, "dosto picture abhi baaki hai"(friends, the movie is not over yet), like existing macbooks, this macbook too has a full size keyboard which is backlit and sports an ambient light sensor that can adjust brightness. Not only this, as you would have found in iphones, this macbooks touchpad is also capable of recognizing and using multi-touch. Another interesting option that the new Macbook Air offers is the option of using a 64 GB SSD as an option for storage. The standard HDD has been slimmed to a normal PATA 4200 RPM 1.8 inch laptop drive.

For its processing power the new Macbook Air utilizes an Intel C2D processing running at 1.6 GHz (with 1.8 GHz being offered as an option), 2 GB of DDR 2 667 RAM on an 800 MHz FSB. The Macbook Air also sports USB 2.0 jacks, Micro-DVI support for external display connectivity and full support for both 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. In terms of battery life Apple has said that with the SSD option, the laptop is capable of easily introducing 5 hrs of battery.

Now as all good things come at cost here goes the list of disadvantages. Firstly it’s fairly watered down and does not offer much in the way of power. In comparison with other 13.3 inch laptops, its battery life seems to be a little better but it loses marks for offering such basic storage options. Another thing is its cost. Its base model retails at $1798 and for a full fledged machine climbs for over $3,200. In this space it’s directly competing with its own brothers which will of course leave it in the dust. But that wont be a matter with those you techies who are big fan of Apple. This MacBook Air would surely become a feather in Apple cap and rather not fly in the Air.

The new Yahoo Messenger for Vista

Well, thats the first ever blog post by me so didnt get a better one to start with our very own yahoo messenger. So, starting of, yahoo recently launched there messenger for vista, which as all know has turned out to be rather a flop among techies. Well the question here arises why the yahoo planned to launch a separate messenger for vista. I have tried previous yahoo messenger releases and they work perfect with vista.
Going further, messenger for vista is just a beta release so you all can catch up with it and try it out. Pretty cool looking, I would give it a 8.5 of 10 on looks. Features: as its a just a beta release so wont be fair to rate it on features or rather wont even compare it with previous yahoo releases. Talking further of features, its just a basic interface that provides chat and file transfer stuff. No webcam stuff as yet up for usage. Interesting feature include yahoo going the apple ichat way including multiple tabs within a single window (like those in firefox n new IE). Also the new messenger provides you with changing colors of each individual window. Well the most interesting feature what i liked was incorporating your yahoo messenger into your vista sidebar that allows you to keep track of individuals. You can set up multiple yahoo messenger gadgets in the sidebar to keep track of number of people. Well I would have surely preferred a single instance of messenger running in sidebar and time to time scrolling between my contacts. but never mind, a cool addition in messenger although.
Whatelse, hmmm... the smileys ofcourse, yahoo has been improving all the way with there smileys. And ofcourse as it is just a beta release your comments are always welcome with the feedback button at the top of every chat window. To check out the new yahoo messenger you can click on the link.
